Bridging Oceans

Some people hold dear and supreme
What's vain in the other men's eye;
But he who can scan both the earth and the sky
And set up a bridge 'tween the low and the high,
Will always distinguish "to be" from "to seem".
My heart is all yours and your heart is in me
Whatever your place on the chart
Of forth-coming ages, whatever they decree,
For you, mine own people, of your soul I will be
For ever and ever a part.

from The Poet by George Cosbuc

Science has brought us the atomic bomb and genetic engineering--the power to kill and the power to design life. But while the First World societies spend billions to refine these two farthest ends of the technological spectrum, the middle is being eroded.
Great art is being replaced by Pop culture. A painting only has value if it is deemed to be a good monetary investment. The only poems worth writing are quickly turned into advertizing slogans for sugar water or automobiles.

It is time to build a bridge across the oceans to facilitate the spread of real art and true culture, instead of just viruses and insects. As wondrous as the internet is, we are still shaking hands digitally instead of in person. (Ironically, of course, you are reading this on the web).

One of France's national treasure (pre-World War One), J. H. Fabre wrote books about insects and nature. A humble man, he lived on a meager patch of land, living off a tiny stipend. But he spent his years observing--first hand--the creatures he wrote about. When you read his books, there is a succulence of language and observation that took me some time to figure out until it dawned on me that he didn't use electronic instruments to assist in his observations. It was a valuable lesson in going right into nature to observe it, and to keep as little between you and it in the effort.

And so it is time to find a blend of technology and human interaction. The web led me to visit Romania and now I have found a second home for my heart and my eyes to a degree I could never have predicted nor imagined.

Take a moment to meet some of the Romanian artists, writers and musicians on the web. Take a moment to shake hands with one of the oldest and most respected cultures in the world: Romania.
