What We Have Forgotten Has Been Kept Safe
It is said that any stream can be crossed by carrying two stones. One stone is placed in the water for the first step. Then, the second for the second step. Turn and take up the first, and continue across in this fashion.
In this fast-paced world driven by technology and money, it often seems that we try to cross streams... by throwing ourselves across without taking the time to use the stone of the past and that which represents care for the future.
What seems like an advantage of wealth and power in the United States is only a temporary illusion. For every SUV (I can't even bring myself to discuss Hummers) that crowds the highways and guzzles diminishing oil resources, a painting remains blank. For every corporate executive that lies about profits to line his own pocket, a poem goes unwritten. For every child who misses a meal, a song remains unsung.
Fancy words, you say. But not nearly fancy enough. The artist's only weapon is the art itself. While soldiers clean and prepare their guns, while politicians polish their speeches, while investment bankers count their profits, we artists must hone our tools and sharpen our skills. They are our stones which will carry us, and the world, across the stream between now and the future.
